Initial Reaction

When I first picked up the book, it immediately caught my attention as I read the author's summary. I normally do not read books at all. Like zero. This book has changed my mind, I enjoy reading the book, and its very interesting as the story progress.

The main characters of the book is Katniss Everdeen, the girl tribute of District 12, and the boy tribute is Peeta Mallark. In this world, there is no longer countries, but everything is divided into district's from 1 to 12. Every year, two tributes from each district, one boy and one girl, are sent to an island, and fight to the death. The fight is televised for everyone to watch, and the winner is showered with prizes and ease at home. Each district is ranked by there number, 1 is the richest district, and 12 would be the poorest district.

Katniss Everdeen family consists of a mother and a sister, her father was killed in a blast. Her mother was very sick, and after Katniss's father died, she was the only hope for the family's survival. So she learned how to hunt, and became very good at it. She killed squirrels, rabbits, and sometimes bigger animals, and would trade some of them at the market to different people, some for bread to Peeta Mallark father who was a baker, and some for household items that they may need. Katniss has a hunting partner named Gale, they have helped each other hunt for food, so that both their family's could have enough to eat.

Primrose Everdeen is the little sister of Katniss, she was originally the girl tribute of District 12, but at the age of only 12, Katniss could not bear the fact of her little sister fighting to the death. So Katniss volunteered to be the tribute to save her little sister.

During the cermonies which is before the fight, all the tributes are trying to impress everybody, so that they can win sponsors. If tributes win sponsors, the sponsors can provide the tribute with weapons and materials that can help the survival of the tribute.

If one of your family members were chosen to participate in a battle of death, where only one can survive, would you volunteer to take there place?

  1. I would volunteer for anyone in my family wether it was my mom, dad, brother, to even my aunts and uncles. I would take there place because I would have a better chance than my brothers and parents.

  2. Honestly, no I wouldn't volunteer to take their place. If they were chosen by someone to be the person that is to participate and only one person is to survive, there is no way in heck that I would put myself in there.

  3. If i was put in that situation i don'd think that i would put myself in that situation in the place of my family. As much as it would be hard to see one of my family members being sent to fight to the death but i couldnt also put myself in that situation to possibly be killed.

  5. I agree with Chris on this one.
I would take my family members place if I knew for certain that I could do better.

  6. Great question! This book sounds really interesting! I think that if someone from my family was chosen to fight, I'd do the same thing as Chris and Alessandro--if I was better at fighting than they were, I'd step in. For example, if it was my sister--I'd for sure step in because she is a big wimp.
