Final Thoughts

Throughout the book, we start to learn that Peeta has always had true feelings for Katniss, and we start to learn that he was always on her side. When he joined an alliance with the other tributes, he was always looking out to make sure Katniss was not harmed. When she had dropped the nest of Tracker Jackers, the tributes were furious and went to chase her down, Peeta came first and told her to run away. Cato the tribute from district 2 was furious and Peeta had to fight him off for Katniss to runaway.

If the two tributes from the same district are the last two tributes alive, than they both win the game. As soon as Katniss heard the new rule, she immediately went to look for Peeta, when she was in the trees, she overheard the tributes say that he was seriously injured, and would die soon enough. So Katniss set off to look for him so they can become a team to win the game.

When Katniss found Peeta, he was seriously injured and Katniss had to tend to Peeta's wound. Peeta was unable to fight, and had a huge cut in his thigh, so Katniss had to take care of him until his wounds healed. The gamemarkers wanted to bring all the tributes together, so that they can have an all-out battle. So they put backpacks with the districts number on them all in one spot. In those backpacks are something that the Tributes really need to help win the game.

Foxface dashed through and grabbed hers and just ran away before anyone could decide to make a move. Katniss thought that she should do the same, but the girl tribute from district 2 had attacked her. She was right about to kill Katniss, when Thresh picked her up, and smashed her head with a rock. Katniss was scared, but Thresh had thanked her for helping Rue. He said that they were even and let her run off. Katniss grabbed her backpack and ran away. Cato from district 2 was furious, and so Thresh and Cato ran off into the woods.

Katniss came back, opened the backpack and in it was a medicine. So Katniss gave it to Peeta, and the next day Peeta felt alot better. He was still not in a good position to start hunting and fighting so they took it really easy, and relaxed for a while. During one of the nights, it had showed that Thresh was killed.

As soon as Peeta recovered, they went off to hunt for food and supplies, and came upon some black berries. Peeta had thought they were safe to eat, and so he gathered them and put them back at camp. Foxface had been lurking around there supplies, and thought they were safe, she ate them and soon died right after.

The Gamemakers wanted to have a final battle, so they drained all the water out of the ponds, and so the the only placed they could go was to the Lake where they first started off. Katniss and Peeta set off to the lake, but there was no sign of Cato. Cato soon came running through the trees and was going towards Katniss and Peeta but towards shelter. Chasing him was 21 werewolf's, each of the werewolf's resembled each tribute that died. Katniss and Peeta ran to climb a tree, and Cato had followed. Katniss and Peeta got into the tree, but the werewolf's caught Cato and dragged him off. All they can hear is Cato making sounds and crys, but in Cato's backpack was hard armor. So it was not going to kill him, so Katniss had one arrow left, and she took a shot and sent it right through his skull.

The Capitol after announced that the new rule about the two tributes from the same district can win the game if they were the last ones alive was revoked. Katniss and Peeta was furious and could not bare the fact of killing eachother after all they had been through. So they pulled out the black berries, and they were both going to eat them. Right when there were about to eat the berries, Effie announced them to stop, and congratulated them for being the victors of the Seventy-four Hunger Games.

In the end, Katniss and Peeta were victors, but it wasn't the end. Word was that the Capitol was furious, because they had made a joke of them, by over ruling the Capitol. So they had to act like they were madly in love and could not bare the fact of killing eachother. Peeta was not informed of acting like that, because he was truly in love with Katniss. So Katniss had told Peeta and he was furious because he felt like he was in love this whole time, and Katniss was just playing along.

My overall impression on this book is great, I must say that this is my favorite book I have read. I haven't read many books either so it is not that big of a deal. It had alot of action, and everytime I picked up the book, I got so into it and could just picture every scene in my head.

Conflict

The biggest problem that the main character Katniss has is trying to stay alive.

Katniss is constantly faced with challenges that involve life or death situations, and how she handles them can win her the Hunger Games. When all the tributes were sent to the terrain, everybody was faced with life or death. You either run for the weapons and materials that could help you win the game and face everybody else that is trying to run for the same thing, or you run away and hide, and not have any materials that could help you survive.

When reading more into the book, Katniss is faced with more problems, and she finds out that Peeta had joined an alliance with other Districts. She is being shot down with fireballs, that are controlled by the Game makers, who lure tributes together to cause a fight. After being hit with one, she has a minor burn on her leg that is enough to put her in pain everytime she takes a step.

Katniss immediately climbed up a tree so that she could hide, and in the end the alliance found her. They could not reach her, they figured she wouldn't stay up there forever, so they set camp. Luckily Haymitch found sponsors to provide Katniss with a medicine to treat her burns, but now she is surrounded by tributes that want to take her life.

Katniss had found a nest of "Tracker Jackers" and they were sedated from all the smoke. The jackers were just waking up. She had a decision to make, either saw off the branch and risk being stung by the wasps, and have a chance of survival, or stay up there and have a small chance of survival. So she started to saw, and at the final moment the branch fell off, the wasps started to wake.

The nest hit the ground and the angry nest started to look for prey. The alliances started to run off, but two were not so lucky. When stung multiple times they started to twitch hysterically on the ground for a few minutes, and than they would start to swell, and ooze. Two tributes were killed, and the rest were stung only a few times, and survived.

Fortunately, Katniss was only stung 3 times, before the nest had crashed to the floor. She started to become woozy, and green liquid started to ooze out of the places that the stingers were. She started to enter a nightmare, she sees Prim die, reliving her fathers death, her body being ripped apart, ants begin to crawl out of the her blisters, and she is covered with them. This is the effect of the venom that the Tracker Jackers carry. To target the fear that lives in your brain.

So she was able to escape and survive, this was one of the biggest challenges that she faced, and she was able to overcome the problem, even though she was injured, and weak.

Do you think that you could ever survive in this type of game, being chased by tributes who want to kill you, being shot down, constantly hungry, thirsty, resting and not knowing if you will survive or not?

Characters

The main characters of the book are Katniss Everdeen, and Peeta Mallark. Katniss is only 16, but holds the responsibility of a fully grown adult. Katniss is strong willed, and courageous, she spends most of her time hunting and trading so that her mother and sister have food to eat.

She loves her little sister Primrose Everdeen, and would do anything for her. Katniss despises her mother sometimes, because after the father had died, the mother became sick and to Katniss it feels like she has given up.

Katniss has alot of emotions that she keeps bottled inside, she doesn't want everyone to see them so that she can appear strong. When she can't handle it, she'll run to her room and cry. Deep down, she always thinks about home, how her little sister is doing, her mother, and Gale.

During the ceremonies, she is very serious, no joking around, she try's to not let her emotions show, because it will make her look weak. She is constantly faced with challenges, being showcased to all the districts, having to treat the event as a positive event, even though she is fighting to the death.

Peeta Mallark, who was the male tribute of District 12 has feelings for Katniss . Peeta would do nice things for Katniss, and would look out for her. Katniss saw these acts as a way of tricking her to trust Peeta, and would in the end stab her in the back. So Katniss would not fall into trusting him, they were forced to walk together holding hands during the cermonies, and in the end Peeta announced his feelings for Katniss.

How would you feel if you were participating in this game, and if the partner who you will later have to kill, announced his/her love for you?

Initial Reaction

When I first picked up the book, it immediately caught my attention as I read the author's summary. I normally do not read books at all. Like zero. This book has changed my mind, I enjoy reading the book, and its very interesting as the story progress.

The main characters of the book is Katniss Everdeen, the girl tribute of District 12, and the boy tribute is Peeta Mallark. In this world, there is no longer countries, but everything is divided into district's from 1 to 12. Every year, two tributes from each district, one boy and one girl, are sent to an island, and fight to the death. The fight is televised for everyone to watch, and the winner is showered with prizes and ease at home. Each district is ranked by there number, 1 is the richest district, and 12 would be the poorest district.

Katniss Everdeen family consists of a mother and a sister, her father was killed in a blast. Her mother was very sick, and after Katniss's father died, she was the only hope for the family's survival. So she learned how to hunt, and became very good at it. She killed squirrels, rabbits, and sometimes bigger animals, and would trade some of them at the market to different people, some for bread to Peeta Mallark father who was a baker, and some for household items that they may need. Katniss has a hunting partner named Gale, they have helped each other hunt for food, so that both their family's could have enough to eat.

Primrose Everdeen is the little sister of Katniss, she was originally the girl tribute of District 12, but at the age of only 12, Katniss could not bear the fact of her little sister fighting to the death. So Katniss volunteered to be the tribute to save her little sister.

During the cermonies which is before the fight, all the tributes are trying to impress everybody, so that they can win sponsors. If tributes win sponsors, the sponsors can provide the tribute with weapons and materials that can help the survival of the tribute.

If one of your family members were chosen to participate in a battle of death, where only one can survive, would you volunteer to take there place?
